   ethnologist
   Born in Aisy-sur-Armançon, Marcel Griaule, after spending several months in Abyssinia (1928-29), organized an expedition through central Africa from east to west (the Dakar-Djibouti mission, 1931-33), inaugurating an era of ethnographic studies in the region. During this expedition, he made contact with the Dogons in the hills of Ban-diagara, Mali, on whom he would do the majority of his studies: Les Masques dogons (1938), Dieu d'eau, a work that reveal the structure of Dogon society (1948), and Renard pale, ethnologie des Dogons, in collaboration with Germaine Dieterlen (1965).
